Creative Planning

»» Crossing Cultural Boundaries with Creative Planning

Creative Planning took us all the way to Africa. Zambia's Banani School asked us to facilitate sessions on how staff members could contribute to the overall development of the school. We found it fascinating how easily the principles of Creative Planning were accepted and used. Symbols and phrases helped those with limited written language skills and consensus building is a traditional cultural value. Plans were made to help move the school into its second decade of providing education to young women.

Future Search Conference

»» Atlin Community begins the building of future vision!

It was a beautiful sunny day when we gathered in the local inn to begin searching for common ground to build Atlin's future vision. We had our work cut out for us with the community divided over a proposal to build a 120 kilometer access road for a mining project. Yet over 40 community groups participated and helped shape a report that gave the provincial government's Environment Minister a better understanding of what dreams Atlinites shared. Participants were amazed at how much common ground they shared.

Strategic Planning

»» Ideal Mission Statements Often Result In Cynicism

It's no wonder to me that work groups either don't know their mission statement or roll their eyes when it is referred to. So often the document sets such high ideals, they do not resemble the day to day reality inside the organization. Who wants to compare their actual organization with an unreachable or unrealistic ideal? That invites negative judgments, so many choose to just ignore it. Yet the desire to create an imaginative mission statement has merit, since change begins with imagining. Where is the balance between positively imagining the future and setting everyone up for the impossible? Although it is often unpopular, I have been encouraging organizations to strike words like world-class and excellence from their mission statements and focus on the achievable. Imagine an ideal that is possible.
