For 20 years, Ed was involved in media work, both print and broadcast, ending his journalism career as News Director at C-FAX radio in Victoria, a leading news outlets on the west coast. During that time, he covered politics, the legal system and a wide variety of “spot news” events, and was involved in many documentaries and investigative special reports. In addition to his administrative and on-air newscaster responsibilities, Edalso hosted a daily talk show. In 1992, Ed left broadcasting to pursue a consulting career. A year later, one of his clients – BC Ferries – hired him as Manager of Communication Services, responding to the need to strengthen the corporation’s Communications Department following a fatal accident at one of the ferry terminals. He served in that role until 1998 when he and a colleague approached senior management with an idea to set up a department devoted solely to serving employees and customers, a unit that later became Organizational and Employee Development. The department’s Statement of Purpose was to “lead” BC Ferries in creating and sustaining a healthy, productive organization where employees and customers feel informed, respected, heard, valued and included.” In 1999, Ed and his staff had facilitated more than 30 focus groups with front-line staff in a project called “Let’s Start Talking”, an initiative that earned an award of excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators. In the fall of 2000, Ed decided to return to consulting work, specializing in leadership, learning and communication. His current and past clients include Royal Roads University, Calliope Learning, the University of Victoria Alumni Association, Transport Canada, the City of Victoria, the Capital Regional District, the Capital Health Region, the Okanagan-Similkameen Health Region, BC Ferries, the Family Caregivers’ Network Society, Volunteer Victoria, and Maritime Forces Pacific. Ed completed his Master of Arts in Leadership and Training degree through Royal Roads University in Victoria and is currently an Associate Faculty member for the University. |
